Palpitations? Flutters? Could You Have a Heart Rhythm Disorder?

Ever feel like you are having heart palpitations or an extra heart beat? How about a flutter or what may feel like a skipped beat? If so, you may suffer from an arrhythmia which is an irregular heart beat that can cause the heart to pump less effectively. In the United States, more than 4 million people suffer from recurrent arrhythmias that cause a heart rate to be either erratic, too fast, or  too slow.

The primary function of the heart is to supply blood and nutrients to the body. The regular beating, or contraction, of the heart moves the blood throughout the body. Each heartbeat is controlled by electrical impulses traveling through the heart. In the normal heart these electrical impulses occur in regular intervals. When something goes wrong with the heart’s electrical system, the heart does not beat regularly. The irregular beating results in a rhythm disorder, or arrhythmia. People suffering from an arrhythmia may experience what feels like palpitations, a flutter, or a skipped or extra heart beat.

Should you need to see a specialist to be evaluated for a heart rhythm disorder, you will receive the highest level of care and expertise at Southern Heart Group.  Our dedicated electrophysiologist, Dr. Venkata Sagi, has successfully treated thousands of patients including those considered to be the most difficult types of cases. A recipient of the Edgar E. Hull Award in Cardiology, Dr. Sagi is a board certified, highly-specialized cardiologist who is an expert in the heart’s electrical system and whose sole focus is treating heart rhythm disorders.

Should you have any questions on arrhythmias or heart rhythm disorders, please call one of our 5 locations or visit our Patient Resources page  for more information.
